@UMG and @Sonymusic new lawsuit against @suno identifies 60,202 sound recordings that the labels allege were copied without authorization.
Under U.S. copyright law, statutory damages for willful infringement can reach $150,000 per work. If that maximum were applied to all 60,202 works, the theoretical ceiling would be just over $9.1 BILLION.
That is NOT a $9B judgment. The alleged infringement, willfulness, and applicable damages would still have to be established through the legal process.
But that number alone shows just how massive this case could become.
And the implications go far beyond Suno: AI music, copyright, training data, licensing, independent artists, and the future economics of the music industry are all being tested here.
I broke down my thoughts on the situation in a TikTok because this conversation deserves a lot more nuance than simply “AI vs. artists.”
