It was such a pleasure to interview our second Nobel prize winner for economics on @novaramedia ! @DAcemogluMIT is the world’s ’top economist’ - at least if you pay attention to the REPEC rankings. And besides winning a Nobel just one of his books, ‘Why Nations Fail’, sold a million copies. Which I gather is pretty good for non-fiction these days… Besides being a math genius, obviously, he’s been embroiled in questions of political economy for the last two decades and, as a result, has a huge hinterland when it comes to political theory, history and literature…where do these people find the time?! When I asked Daron what Britain should do after two ‘lost decades’ on the economy, his answer was swift: worker-centric AI. Be a global centre in having this technology expedite the productivity of electricians, nurses, carpenters, accountants - rather than simply replacing them. His message on AI is in fact a remarkably simple one: we don’t have to go down the route we’re being told is inevitable, of major US monopolies that focus, ultimately, on achieving AGI. If that happens then, in all likelihood, we ain’t seen nothing yet when it comes to regional and income inequality, and by extension political instability. It was a pleasure talking to him.
