For too long, many locally employed doctors have been working on fixed-term contracts with little certainty about their future.
Now, following the June 2026 deal, permanent contracts will become the default for locally employed doctors. It's a major campaign win that helps bring greater security, protection and stability to thousands of doctors.

We’ve been in discussion with the NHSE Exec team, via the new Industrial Relations Committee, since this morning on the issue regarding @NHS.net emails.
We are actively working to clarify what triggered this, what it means, and to agree solutions that work for residents.
I’m willing to bet a large amount of money that resident doctors weren’t considered, let alone involved, in this decision.
This, once again, shows rotations and the decisions taken by the NHS make working well as a resident doctor borderline impossible.

More than 200 resident doctors will begin new pilot placements in England today, marking the first step towards much-needed reform of an absurd rotational training system. It's hoped these pilots will reduce the unnecessary waste and disruption caused by the current system.
This reform was part of the deal that ended resident doctor industrial action in 2024.
