I don’t pretend debt is just the fault of the current government. But rather than tackle it, there is no question they’ve made it worse - and the interest bill so much higher. Imagine the defence, healthcare or lower taxes that £200 billion would buy?

Highest tax take in history, yet Healey and Burnham are piling more and more on to the ‘national credit card’. Labour have lost control of the public finances.

Why can’t Andy Burnham do “everything possible” to bring down the cost of welfare, or do “everything possible” to fund defence properly? Why is giving away this territory such a priority for Labour that they are willing to give away billions to do so when there’s little money for anything else?

The Labour government cut Wandsworth Council’s budget by 40%. It speaks volumes that Andy Burnham is happy to slash the funding for Conservative-run councils, but won’t touch the bloated welfare bill.
