The surname #Gupta is not exclusive to the Agarwal #Bania community. It is used by various Vaishya castes across North India, including Agarwals, Maheshwaris, Khandelwals, Oswals, Porwals, Mahajan/Kirars, Agrahari, Kandu, Kesarwani, Dusar, Kasaudhan,Umar, Gahoi, Ajudhyabasi,etc
I recently shifted to Amritsar and met two types of Guptas—some say they’re Mahajan, others Aggarwal Bania. I thought Gupta was mainly an Aggarwal surname, so how are Mahajans whom u said Kiraar also using Gupta?
