as someone who has built a sizable and approachable left community online, the secret sauce is routinely purging narcissistic woke scolds who deploy emancipatory language when they want to center their immediate desires selfishly as a separate convo is taking place. it’s also caused a lot of grief from ppl who see out of context clips, but nevertheless boundaries must be drawn.

I have many thoughts on the Nikole Hannah-Jones story, especially having attended the kind of schools she sent her daughter to, but if we're looking for takeaways, here's a simple one. When an expert in education so thoroughly demonstrates a jarring and near complete lack of expertise in the act of getting an education for her own daughter, we should stop taking advice from her on curriculum, instruction, and all other fads disguised as wisdom she offers. That seems like the least we could do. Her daughter's personal struggle, which is indeed sympathetic, wasn't much of a teachable moment for her, as she doesn't seem to have updated any of her priors (and actually fudges funding facts, so as not to disrupt the narrative of under-resourced schools). But it should be a teachable moment for us, about the outsized influence of a scholar who claims to know better than anyone what her daughter would be up against in the school to which she chose to send her, but was inexplicably surprised and left her daughter completely unprepared for it.

I think it's completely fine to bring a cup of coffee to a job interview and not appropriate at all to bring a cup of iced coffee and the only real difference I can think of is that the iced coffee can sweat and make a mess on the interviewer's desk. Anyone else with me on this?

None of the teachers were publicly embarrassed. The elem principal, whose identity was discovered only after NHJ published the article, failed up and now makes $175k as a DOE literacy coach. The teachers are not named and even if they were they’re in a union and it’s basically impossible to fire them, plus many people are defending them. The MS principal is treated as a hero in the article. Where’s the shame? Where’s the accountability? There is zero. None.
I know people are dunking on this but (1) it probably did work sometimes, social capital is a real thing, and (2) it's actually kind of insane that it DIDN'T work as well or as often as she thought? Like if you're the school, you have to know that you're eventually going to be very publicly embarrassed if you screw things up for the kid of one of the most famous journalists in the country, who made her name partly by writing about her daughter's education.

One last thought on the NHJ article: you cannot simultaneously exhort teachers as professionals and lambast parents who want to be involved in picking out the curriculum, the books stocked in the library, and how subjects such as reading are taught….
….and then criticize a parent who trusted her child’s educators and didn’t hover when it turns out that the teachers failed at their job and the child learned nothing.
Teachers want all the autonomy and none of the responsibility. But it doesn’t work like that.
