What happens when Black-led research moves beyond the report — and into the room? This Black History Month, HERSANA is bringing together research, conversation and calls to action exploring what we know about GBV, what we’ve missed and what needs to change.

Black women & Black non-binary people living in the UK - we need your voice. Power in Print is a national by-and-for study documenting how Black femmes experience gender-based violence alongside racism. The anonymous survey takes 10 mins and closes tomorrow, Friday 4 Sept.

What does Power in Print mean to you? What should it mean for us? For us it’s about taking the things we say, the things we’ve lived and the things that often go unheard and putting them somewhere they can’t be dismissed.

There’s something powerful about turning our experiences into something real, tangible and lasting. A collection of voices. An archive of experiences. A record of what Black femmes have been saying all along and hopefully something that helps change what comes next.

The Power in Print survey is soon coming to a close. We’re in the final stretch and we still need your voices. Every experience shared helps us build a clearer picture of what Black femmes face when navigating gender-based violence and what needs to change.

Who gets believed? Who gets support? Who gets access to justice? The reality is that there are still huge disparities in who gets help, resources and recourse when experiencing gender-based violence.

Perpetrators of domestic abuse exist across all communities. However, the way their behaviour is understood, identified, and responded to can be shaped by racial or gendered prejudice, and other systemic forms of oppression and inequality.

Employers can consult ‘by-and-for’ specialist organisations where needed to sense-check their approach. There are also specialist behaviour change programmes available in parts of the country for people from marginalised communities.

Nothabo Zandile Tshuma. Natalie. Nala. A whole family of Black women and girls. A whole future stolen. We remember Nothabo, Natalie and Nala. We say their names because they are loved, they matter and they deserve to be remembered for far more than the violence that took them.
