Africa still has no permanent seat on the Security Council. A 21st century Security Council without permanent African representation is unjust & indefensible. We must reform the Council so that it reflects today’s world with the legitimacy and effectiveness that today’s challenges demand.

I had been collaborating with Jason on promoting his new memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, and was so looking forward to helping him and his extraordinary mother, Gif, share their story…a story of autism, adversity, faith, a mother’s fierce determination, and a young boy who defied every limitation placed upon him to become a professor at Cambridge. These were the words I had written for the back of his book: “As the mother of a child on the spectrum, I was reminded once again that there is nothing more fierce than a mother’s determination to see her child receive the services and attention he deserves; nothing more inspiring than a stranger with nothing to gain who asks anyway, ‘How can I help?’; and nothing more empowering than intervention combined with positivity, love and grit. Read this book and prepare to be inspired.” I never imagined those words would now feel like part of a farewell. Whatever questions surrounded Jason’s professional life, nothing justified the relentless public humiliation, online cruelty and dehumanization he endured. We must remember that behind every headline and every social media pile-on is a whole human being!…with a heart, a family and a breaking point. Words have weight. Cruelty has consequences. Jason was only 41. His life mattered. His journey mattered. And the story he and his mother fought so hard to create still matters. My heart is shattered for Gif, his wife, his children and everyone who loved him. I am so deeply sorry, Jason. May you finally rest in peace. 💔🕊️

Every boat that arrives brings a question along with the migrants: what kind of world have we built, if so many brothers and sisters must risk death to seek life? Human dignity demands legal and safe pathways, rescue and assistance, real cooperation against traffickers, effective protection for victims, serious processes of reception and integration, and policies that allow every person to live with dignity in their own land. We cannot grow accustomed to counting the dead. Human dignity has no passport and does not lose its value when crossing a border. #ApostolicJourney

Sexism just has no place in our political debate, full stop. A billboard truck using sexist language has been driving around Melbourne as part of a secret and well-funded political campaign. People are entitled to disagree with me. That’s democracy. But I care that this attacks women. And I care about who’s next. The political debate in this country has become corrosive over the last few years. So much so that behaviour which would once have been condemned is now just another part of life. Media don’t call it out. They report on this like it’s fair game, like it’s normal. But nothing about this is normal. If you don’t take a stand against this creeping culture, it has a tendency of taking over. You only have to look at America to know that. I cannot stand back and let Victoria become a place where this sort of language is fair game against any woman at work - or any woman in leadership. If we don’t draw a line, the line will keep moving. At the end of the day, I just want my kids to grow up knowing that women deserve the same respect as men. I want girls to know that they should never need to aim lower just to feel safer. And I want boys to know that they don’t have to put women ‘in their place’ to make their own way in the world. Sexism hurts everyone. If the media won’t call out it, I will.

My white dad died of prostate cancer. 1 in 4 Black men will get prostate cancer. That’s twice the rate of white people. This policy will save lives - and mean more NHS resources for others. This opportunistic race baiting is disgusting.
