We are incredibly saddened by the news that our long-time friend, Grammy and Tony Award-winning songwriter, singer, Broadway composer, and MTI author Duncan Sheik has passed away at the age of 56.
His 1996 hit song "Barely Breathing" earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance, cementing him as an alt-pop star of the '90s. Yet never one to abide by convention, Sheik took his talents to musical theatre in the following decade. Alongside book writer and lyricist Steven Sater, he composed the genre-disrupting score for Spring Awakening, winning the Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score in 2007. Spring Awakening also took home the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Sater and Sheik collaborated with Jessie Nelson on the Off-Broadway sensation Alice by Heart, which premiered at MCC Theater in 2019. Resonating deeply with young musical theatre lovers, Alice by Heart continues to be performed everywhere and was recently performed at the International Thespian Festival in 2024, with both Sater and Sheik in attendance.
Melding pop and rock with musical theatre, Duncan Sheik was innovative in expanding what a musical score could be. Everyone who met him was touched by his brilliance and humor. His talent and dynamic presence will be deeply missed.

Renowned orchestrator and music director Harold Wheeler has passed away. For over 20 years he shared his musical talents with us through his orchestrations of The Full Monty, Hairspray, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Ain’t Too Proud, and more.
