How do you store fresh rainwater when the ground beneath you is salty?
For centuries, the Maldharis of Gujarat’s Banni grasslands have found an ingenious answer.
They identified natural depressions where monsoon rainwater could seep into the soil and settle above the denser saline groundwater.
By carefully digging into this upper layer, they could access relatively fresh water for their communities and livestock.
No modern machinery. Just generations of observing the land, understanding water and passing that knowledge forward.
In one of India’s harshest landscapes, they turned scarce rainfall into a lifeline.
