The Office of Remigration is real, confirmed on the State Department's own organizational chart since May 2025, carved out of the bureau that used to resettle refugees. The term has a documented history in European far-right politics, used by Austria's Herbert Kickl and AfD leader Alice Weidel, popularized by a white nationalist influencer, and historically understood as a euphemism for ethnic cleansing. This isn't outside critics overreading a word choice. Per the Washington Post's reporting, State Department officials objected internally to the name specifically because of its ethnic cleansing connotations and were overruled. The office has reportedly authorized over 400 million dollars to more than 30 countries, some run by authoritarian governments, to accept deportees who have no ties to those countries whatsoever.
