Health in Focus 🇷🇼 | Bringing cervical cancer screening closer to women
More than 600,000 women in #Rwanda have been screened for cervical cancer as the country accelerates efforts towards its 2027 cervical cancer elimination target.
According to Dr Theoneste Maniragaba(@TheonesteManir8 ), Director of the Cancer Programme at Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), Rwanda is targeting about 1.5 million women for screening, with a goal of reaching 70% of women aged 30–49 by 2027.
The effort is being taken to the district and community level, where districts work with health facilities and Community Health Workers (#CHWs ) to mobilise eligible women, raise awareness and support access to screening.
Through community-based self-sampling, women can collect samples closer to home, while CHWs support the collection and transportation of samples for testing.
This connection between national leadership, districts, health facilities and communities is helping make cervical cancer screening more accessible and strengthening the focus on prevention and early detection.
From HPV vaccination to screening, early detection and treatment, Rwanda continues to build a comprehensive approach to protecting women from cervical cancer.
Prevention starts in the community. Early detection can save live.
