Everyone asks "how do we afford PIP?"
Nobody asks "why does disability cost so much?"
A grab rail: £8 at Screwfix. £85 through a mobility company.
Adapted cutlery: £12 to manufacture. £35 in the catalogue.
A shower seat: £15 plastic stool. £90 as a "shower aid."
A postural chair: £200 to build. £800 with "disability" on the label.
Disability costs more because the market CHARGES more. Not because it COSTS more. The word "adapted" on the box adds 300-500% to the price.
PIP exists to cover the "extra cost of disability." But the extra cost is ARTIFICIAL. Created by manufacturers who know you NEED the product and price accordingly.
Fix the price. Sell aids at cost. Remove the markup. Remove the VAT. Remove the glossy catalogue and the sales rep's commission.
The "extra cost of disability" drops by 60-80%. PIP spending falls. Without cutting a single person's support.
Helen Whately has posted thirteen times asking how to cut PIP. She has never once asked why disability products cost five times what they should.

If you’re doing the Great North Run tomorrow, do be aware there are no dedicated women’s toilets in the start area.
According to guidance emailed to runners yesterday, men’s urinals will be provided in two areas.
Women get holes in the ground to squat over - in one area - which can also be used by men.
PEEQUAL open-air squat urinals are apparently “designed for women, trans women, AFAB and non-binary runners.”
So men get dedicated men’s urinals.
The 'women's urinals' can be used by both men and women.
As the video shows, these so-called “women’s urinals” involve squatting over an open-air unit, with used sanitary products disposed of in a bag hanging from the side.
Apparently PEEQUAL has proved popular at music festivals. But this isn’t Glastonbury. It’s a major running event involving thousands of women, of all ages - some of whom will be menstruating, changing sanitary protection or simply wanting privacy before a half marathon.
Were any women consulted about this?
Were they asked whether they were comfortable having no dedicated female-only toilet provision, while men were given their own urinals?

The design team has responded. The pavement stripes are purely ‘illustrative’ not an intention to paint stripes. Illustrative of what then ⁉️ The fact that artistic impressions of a scheme bear no relation to what is actually intended to be built. Give me strength 🙄
When you give a community crayons to reimagine their neighbourhood this is the nonsense you get. NO to painting striped pavements, causes problems for many impairment groups. Localism cannot override accessibility. Gets rubber stamped next week 😤
