Do hard things. And fail often. DNF at my first fall marathon today. - 21.45 miles - 6:24 average pace Executed the pace well. Executed nutrition well. Executed hydration very poorly. Fell way behind on fluids in the 70 degree temperature and 90% humidity. It slammed me at Mile 21. Felt the hamstring pull and seize up. Went full lock a few steps later and I decided to stop before it became an injury. Never fun, but that’s showbiz, baby. Get in the arena. Sign up for the physical side quest. You may not always get it done. But you’ll win at life along the way. Good training run. Learned a lot. And we live to race another day!

Shared this in response to a quote tweet questioning why I stopped when I did. Sharing here because I think it’s an important lesson:

It’s harder to stop than finish the race at this point. You know your body more than anyone else Also insane pace. Elite level

This is just as impressive, if not more, than the random marathon you crushed on a track Failing with grace, awareness, and continued optimism is maybe the hardest thing. Thanks for sharing with us.

Bad luck, that's a crazy fast time. I got smoked by the heat on my last one and was over double the time you would've finished in!

Well that was a day...just way too hot 🥵 Ended up doing 5hrs+ 🙈 5k - felt good (all downhill) 8k - hit the waterfront in the beating sun, suddenly feels like it's not happening 10k - people start passing me 12k - wish I'd only done the half 18k - my first walk Only got worse from there...ah well, at least finished strong! So many people walking, lots of folk passed out getting medical attention on route. Pls, never let me do another marathon, they really aren't enjoyable (yeah I know I'll be back..)

Just didn’t execute. But great to learn through it and be healthy to fight for the next one! I’m excited.

You’re a legend. What a pace in the humidity. The beauty of being smart and listening to your body is that now there will certainly be a next time

Probably one thing I’ve actually gotten wiser about in my “old age” is knowing when to push and when to stop. This was a pretty easy call in the moment. There was no pushing on it. Would have ended up out for a few months. Stay in the game.

Hell of an effort dude. Obviously not the ending you wanted, but a lot to be proud of and a lot to learn from this one. You made the right call. Onward man, excited to see what’s next🤝

great call to not force it. the injury setback isn't close to worth it. that 90% humidity is treacherous. I moved to FL a while back having lived in the NE most of my life and tried to run. Thought I was wildly out of shape until I realized it was 90% humidity.
