Much of the recent debate on AI is focused on how we “control” it - that is the wrong question. International AI cooperation is essential, but relying on treaties or agreements would be wholly ineffective. These will not stop hostile actors, or even individuals with access to tech, from developing or exploiting AI. AI is already everywhere and it’s here to stay. The debate must extend beyond that of ChatGPT, Claude or any one platform. Open-weight and open-source models are already widely available, can run locally, are being used by businesses, researchers and developers. Instead, the conversation must be how we can adapt to: - Use AI to enhance our defence and national security - Harness the AI benefits to build a strong economy and deliver economic growth - Strengthen cyber security and critical infrastructure, including our world-leading AI Security Institute - Create an environment that ensures the UK is a globally competitive innovator The world has already changed. The challenge for the UK is not how to slow AI down. A life on benefits can pay more than getting a job. That's wrong. Our economy needs British people – not just migrants imported to fill the gap. New @Conservative policy won't let anyone stay on benefits for years if they're able to work.

"Isn't it patronising? To tell people how to spend their own money?" @bbcnickrobinson asks shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately, as the Conservatives promise to prevent benefit claimants from spending their welfare payments on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling.

If you can work, you should. Nobody should be able to live a lifestyle on benefits. @Conservatives will make welfare fair to taxpayers and to those who work hard and do the right thing.

By publishing proposals like this with low starts as the sole justification for abolition, Skills England shows a worrying blindness to small but highly technical sectors which are economically vital and need their training routes.

Britain should be where the world comes to shop. Labour is driving visitors away, letting down our retailers, designers and manufacturers. The Conservatives will restore tax-free shopping for overseas visitors. British business should compete, create jobs and grow our economy.
